Screes Fell Race 2009

Borrowdale's Nick Fish won The Screes Fell Race which was held in memory of WMRA Chair, Danny Hughes. Although only 48 runners took part, fell superstar Joss Naylor whipped up enthusiasm at the start. There was slight confusion after the fast run out along the valley when the farmer moved one of the arrows and sent everyone through deep bracken around the edge of his farm! The steep climb to Whin Rigg was followed by a gentle section along the ridge to Irton Fell before the main descent. The mild conditions meant that the rain showers provided welcome relief and helped wash off the mud from what must be one of the messiest descents in the calendar. Julia Fish finished strongly to take second place out of six women.
